Polycystic kidney disease Polycystic kidney disease is a disease which runs in families, it is due to a problem in kidney development and leads to enlarged kidneys full of cysts. The onset of the disease is normally seen in the sufferer's late 40s to 50s and, due to it's genetic causes, is passed down the generations. Polycystic Kidney Disease is the most common genetic, life threatening disease affecting more than 12.5 million people worldwide - regardless of male or female, age, race or ethnic origin. In fact, PKD affects more people than cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, hemophilia, Down syndrome and sickle cell anemia If you are willing to give "the gift of life", then you need to register your intention, and carry the donor card at all times.
